Qum (also Qom or Ghom) is a holy city in central Iran that emerged as a major fine-rug weaving center only in the twentieth century, yet rapidly established a reputation for producing some of the most technically accomplished rugs in Persia. Qum is particularly renowned for its silk rugs — extraordinarily fine, with knotting densities that allow for photographic detail in the design.
Both wool and silk Qum rugs feature elaborate curvilinear compositions: garden formats, hunting scenes, medallion and arabesque designs, and the famous "tree of life" pattern. Their jewel-like palette and exceptional fineness make them as much works of art as functional textiles — equally at home framed on a wall or laid in a formal room.
