This handmade, one-of-a-kind vintage Amritsar rug from India, circa 1940, showcases an elegant traditional composition with a spacious camel field, refined floral motifs, and a softly drawn central medallion. Its hand-knotted character and beautifully aged palette of ivory, taupe, rust, and brown give it the understated sophistication collectors prize in decorative Amritsar carpets. An ideal centerpiece for a living room, bedroom, or dining room.
Faded warm tones of camel, ivory, taupe, brown, rust, and burgundy, with a camel field.
Amritzar (also spelled Amritsar) is a city in the Punjab region of northern India that emerged as a significant carpet-weaving center in the late nineteenth century, producing fine rugs primarily for export to Europe and America. Amritzar rugs are closely related to Agra carpets in technique — woven on a cotton foundation with a Persian asymmetric knot — but tend toward softer, more pastel palettes and lighter, more airy field compositions.
Floral lattice, scrolling vine, and open medallion formats are common. Their supple handle, refined drawing, and gentle color make them perennial favorites for traditional and transitional interiors.
