Khorasan (also Khorassan) is a vast region of northeastern Iran encompassing a number of important weaving centers, most notably Meshed (now Mashhad), the region's capital. Khorasan rugs share certain characteristics — double-wefted cotton foundations, asymmetric knotting, and elaborate curvilinear floral designs — while varying considerably in quality and palette from workshop to workshop.
The finest antique Khorasan carpets rival the great city workshops of central Persia in their technical achievement. Their palette tends toward rich reds, deep blues, and ivory, with medallion and all-over floral formats predominating. They are substantial, formal rugs suited to large rooms and traditional interiors.
