Antique Belouch rug, circa 1920, with a finely detailed tribal lattice of compartmented panels and small geometric medallions rendered in a softly faded palette. This handmade, one-of-a-kind runner showcases intricate border work, a warm terracotta field, and crisp ivory patterning that give it the collected character buyers seek in antique tribal weavings. Its narrow scale and elongated format make it an ideal accent for a hallway, entryway, or office.
Faded warm tones of terracotta, ivory, camel, taupe, rust, and pale blue, with a terracotta field.
Belouch (also Baluch or Balochi) rugs are woven by the Baluch tribal confederacy spanning eastern Iran, western Afghanistan, and parts of Pakistan. Among the most immediate and expressive of all tribal rugs, they are made on horizontal ground looms using a wool foundation and a distinctive palette dominated by deep reds, rich browns, dark navy, and ivory — colors drawn from the natural dyes of the desert plateau.
Designs include prayer formats, repeating geometric field patterns, and stylized tree-of-life compositions, often finished with elaborate flatwoven kilim ends. Their rustic, heartfelt quality and superb natural dyes make them perennially popular with collectors and designers seeking authentic tribal character.
