This antique Gabbeh rug, circa 1940, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind runner distinguished by its softly faded tribal geometry and elongated lattice of stepped diamond medallions. Its warm blush, ivory, and rust palette, framed by a bold geometric border, gives the piece a beautifully timeworn character with strong decorative presence and artisanal appeal. An ideal accent for a hallway, entryway, or bedroom.
Faded warm tones of blush, ivory, rust, peach, taupe, terracotta, and camel, with a blush field.
Gabbe (also Gabbeh) rugs are woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribal women in the Zagros Mountains of southern Iran, primarily by the Qashqai and Luri tribes. The word "gabbeh" means "raw" or "unfinished" in Persian, reflecting the bold, improvisational aesthetic of these textiles — thick-piled, loosely knotted, and filled with naive figurative imagery: animals, people, trees, and abstract forms drawn directly from the weaver's imagination and daily life.
Their thick, soft pile, earthy natural dyes, and utterly original imagery have made Gabbeh rugs enormously popular since they were "discovered" by the Western market in the 1980s. They bring immediate warmth and personality to any interior.
