This antique Bidjar rug, circa 1940, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian carpet distinguished by its finely drawn all-over floral field and elegant central medallion. Its softly aged palette of taupe, ivory, slate blue, and blush lends the hand-knotted design a refined, timeworn character, while the layered border and dense patterning showcase the precise craftsmanship collectors prize in Bidjar weavings. An ideal centerpiece for a living room, dining room, or office.
Faded neutral tones of taupe, ivory, slate, charcoal, rose, beige, brown, and pale blue, with a taupe field.
Bidjar is a Kurdish town in northwestern Iran, renowned for producing what are often called the "iron rugs of Persia" — the heaviest, most densely woven and structurally rigid pile rugs in the world. The distinctive construction technique, in which the weft threads are hammered tightly into place during weaving, creates an almost board-like stiffness and an exceptionally dense pile that wears virtually indefinitely.
Bidjar designs include elaborate herati patterns, large floral medallions, and the distinctive "garden" or vase carpet format. Their palette tends toward deep jewel tones — rich madder reds, indigos, and ivory. Bidjar rugs are ideal for high-traffic areas and are among the most durable of all Oriental rugs.
