This antique Khotan rug, circa 1920, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind East Turkestan carpet distinguished by its elongated gallery format and striking pomegranate-and-vase composition. The saturated red field is framed by an ivory border with geometric guard stripes, while the softly faded palette and finely drawn tribal-floral motifs give it the nuanced character collectors prize in antique Khotan weavings. A compelling decorative anchor for a hallway, living room, or office.
Faded warm tones of red, ivory, coral, rose, taupe, slate, and charcoal, with a red field.
Khotan rugs are from the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan. These unique rugs made in the towns Khotan, Kashgar, and Yarkand are often referred to as Samarkand after the main trading town in the region. They have a combination of designs and being on the silk route have influences from their Chinese, Turkoman, and Turkish neighbors. Fretwork, cloud borders, trellis patterns, pomegranates and carnations all are incorporated into their designs. They are of long and relatively narrow size with simplistic and spacious designs.
