Derbend (also Derband or Derbent) is a city on the Caspian coast in Dagestan, Russia, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and a historic center of Caucasian rug weaving. Derbend rugs share characteristics with both Shirvan and Kuba work — finely knotted, with geometric field patterns and a tightly controlled palette of deep blues, reds, and ivory.
They often feature stylized floral motifs, Kufic borders, and small animal forms woven into the field. Their precise drawing and rich, jewel-like color make them prized additions to any collection of Caucasian work.
