This antique Khotan rug, circa 1870, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind East Turkestan weaving distinguished by its rare compartmental field and restrained geometric drawing. Its softly faded camel and taupe ground is enlivened by delicate rose, brown, and blue accents, with finely articulated borders and spacious motifs that showcase the refined balance prized in 19th-century Khotan carpets. A sophisticated statement piece for a living room, dining room, or office.

Khotan rugs are from the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan. These unique rugs made in the towns Khotan, Kashgar, and Yarkand are often referred to as Samarkand after the main trading town in the region. They have a combination of designs and being on the silk route have influences from their Chinese, Turkoman, and Turkish neighbors. Fretwork, cloud borders, trellis patterns, pomegranates and carnations all are incorporated into their designs. They are of long and relatively narrow size with simplistic and spacious designs.
