This vintage Khotan rug is a handmade, one-of-a-kind carpet distinguished by its refined East Turkestan design vocabulary and spacious geometric composition. The ivory field is organized in a precise all-over lattice of rosettes and angular motifs, framed by multiple borders with crisp sky blue accents that give the piece an elegant, architectural presence. Khotan rugs are from the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan. These unique rugs made in the towns Khotan, Kashgar, and Yarkand are often referred to as Samarkand after the main trading town in the region. They have a combination of designs and being on the silk route have influences from their Chinese, Turkoman, and Turkish neighbors. Fretwork, cloud borders, trellis patterns, pomegranates and carnations all are incorporated into their designs. They are of long and relatively narrow size with simplistic and spacious designs.
