This antique Malayer runner, hand-knotted in Persia circa 1920, is a handmade one-of-a-kind piece with a striking tribal geometric design and a richly patterned ivory border framing a deep brown field. A sequence of angular medallions in sky blue, rust, ivory, and taupe gives the rug strong visual rhythm, while the aged palette and crisp drawing showcase the character collectors prize in early village weaving. Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.
