This vintage Tibetan runner, circa 1960, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind textile distinguished by its graphic charcoal, slate, and ivory linear composition. Its elongated field layers fine horizontal striations with bold stepped blocks and a vertical dark band, creating a refined modernist rhythm with visible textural variation. An ideal statement runner for a hallway, entryway, or long living room passage.
Muted cool tones of charcoal, slate, ivory, pewter, and ebony, with a charcoal field.
Tibetan rugs are woven using a distinctive knotting technique unique to the Tibetan plateau — a loop technique quite different from the Turkish or Persian knot — which produces a characteristically thick, dense pile. Historically, Tibetan rugs served primarily as seating and bedding rather than floor coverings, and their bold, open compositions reflect this intimate scale of use.
Traditional designs include lotus and cloud motifs, geometric border systems, tiger and snow leopard stripes, and boldly stylized dragons — all drawn from the rich visual world of Tibetan Buddhism. Contemporary Tibetan-Nepalese rugs produced in Kathmandu workshops are among the world's most respected for the quality of their Himalayan wool and the range of their designs.
