This handmade, one-of-a-kind antique Mazlaghan rug from Persia, circa 1930, showcases a striking tribal geometric composition with a dramatic stepped medallion-like motif set against an earthy camel field. Its hand-knotted character is expressed through the beautifully aged, softly faded palette, crisp ivory border, and finely drawn small-scale motifs that give the piece depth, rhythm, and collector appeal. Mazlaghan is a village in the Hamadan district of northwest Iran, producing rugs closely related to other Hamadan-area village work — single-wefted, cotton-foundation, symmetrically knotted — but distinguished by their particularly bold and graphic medallion designs and strong palette. Large central medallions on open red or blue fields, with bold corner pieces and a characteristic vine-and-flower border, are typical.
