This antique Persian Bidjar rug, circa 1930, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind piece distinguished by its softly timeworn palette and refined floral medallion design. The faded ivory and beige field is layered with pale blue detailing and an elegant border, showcasing the nuanced character and decorative depth collectors prize in antique hand-knotted rugs. Its subdued coloration and classic Persian drawing make it an ideal choice for a living room, bedroom, or office.
Faded neutral tones of beige, ivory, pale blue, taupe, and sand, with a ivory field.
Bidjar is a Kurdish town in northwestern Iran, renowned for producing what are often called the "iron rugs of Persia" — the heaviest, most densely woven and structurally rigid pile rugs in the world. The distinctive construction technique, in which the weft threads are hammered tightly into place during weaving, creates an almost board-like stiffness and an exceptionally dense pile that wears virtually indefinitely.
Bidjar designs include elaborate herati patterns, large floral medallions, and the distinctive "garden" or vase carpet format. Their palette tends toward deep jewel tones — rich madder reds, indigos, and ivory. Bidjar rugs are ideal for high-traffic areas and are among the most durable of all Oriental rugs.
