This antique Malayer rug, circa 1920, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian runner distinguished by its softly faded palette and bold geometric drawing. The ivory field is framed by sky blue borders and animated with angular medallion forms, tribal motifs, and delicate abrashed passages that showcase its hand-knotted character and time-softened decorative appeal. An elegant choice for a hallway, entryway, or beside a bed.
Faded neutral tones of ivory, sky blue, taupe, beige, camel, and rust, with a ivory field.
Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.
Malayer designs tend toward the geometric, with herati, mahi (fish), and stylized floral patterns rendered in a traditional palette of deep indigo, madder red, and ivory. Their precise drawing, durable construction, and handsome proportions make antique Malayer rugs a consistently sought-after choice for collectors and decorators alike.
