Hereke is a town near Istanbul on the Sea of Marmara, home to the imperial Ottoman workshops established by Sultan Abdülmecid I in 1843. Carpet weaving began at the manufactory in 1891, after which it produced carpets for the Ottoman palaces and as diplomatic gifts, using the finest materials — silk pile, metallic thread, and exceptionally fine wool — and achieving knotting densities among the highest ever recorded.
Hereke rugs are woven in both silk and wool, often featuring delicate curvilinear Persian-inspired designs — floral medallions, scrolling arabesques, garden formats — executed with extraordinary technical precision. Antique examples are among the most refined and valuable of all Oriental rugs. Even twentieth-century Hereke workshop pieces are prized for their exceptional craftsmanship.
