This antique Northwest Persian rug, circa 1920, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind village weaving distinguished by its striking compartment design and richly geometric tribal drawing. The field is organized into a lattice of small panels filled with angular star and cross motifs, framed by multiple borders in softly faded rust, ivory, taupe, and slate tones that showcase its age and hand-knotted character. Its collectible graphic presence and warm, timeworn palette make it an ideal centerpiece for a living room, hallway, or office.
Faded warm tones of taupe, rust, ivory, slate, brown, and camel, with a taupe field.
Northwest Persian is a regional designation covering the broad arc of carpet-producing areas in Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, and the surrounding provinces of northwestern Iran — including Heriz, Serapi, Bakhshayesh, Karaje, and the many Kurdish and Shahsavan tribal weaving groups of the region. The area has been one of the most prolific and important sources of antique carpets in the world.
Northwest Persian rugs share a family resemblance: bold geometric or semi-geometric designs, strong natural dye palettes, and robust construction on wool or cotton foundations. The range of quality and style is enormous — from grand Serapi palace carpets to humble village runners — but all share a vitality and directness that makes them perennially compelling.
