Ghiordes (also Gördes) is a town in western Turkey with one of the oldest and most distinguished rug-weaving traditions in Anatolia. Ghiordes is the origin of the Turkish (symmetrical) knot — the so-called "Ghiordes knot" — which is now used across Turkey and much of the Caucasus.
Antique Ghiordes rugs are best known for their prayer format: a graceful arch or "mihrab" supported by slender columns, with a lamp motif suspended in the niche, rendered in a soft palette of rose, ivory, and pale green. Their refined drawing and historical importance make them among the most sought-after of all antique Turkish rugs.
