This antique Bessarabian rug is a handmade, one-of-a-kind flatwoven textile distinguished by its elongated gallery format and striking vertical arrangement of stylized floral motifs. The charcoal-brown field is animated by rows of crimson and rose blossoms linked by ivory vine forms, framed by a crisp geometric border that underscores its folk-art character and decorative precision. Its narrow proportions make it an ideal statement piece for a hallway, entryway, or along a dining room passage.
Muted neutral tones of charcoal, taupe, crimson, rose, ivory, and black, with a charcoal field.
Bessarabian rugs are produced in the Bessarabia region — now divided between Moldova, Ukraine, and Romania — during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They include both flatwoven kilim-technique textiles and knotted-pile examples, all drawing on Eastern European folk embroidery traditions and the influence of French Aubusson carpets. They are distinctive for their bold floral compositions on dark grounds: large roses, carnations, and leafy bouquets in vivid colors against deep black, navy, or burgundy fields.
Their painterly quality, bold scale, and deep, rich color have made Bessarabian rugs enormously popular in contemporary interiors, where their dramatic floral compositions bring warmth and personality to both traditional and modern spaces.
