This antique Bidjar rug, circa 1910, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian carpet distinguished by its dramatic geometric medallion composition and richly detailed border work. The deep navy corner spandrels, ivory border, and saturated red field are animated by crisp floral and angular motifs that showcase the precision and visual depth collectors prize in hand-knotted Bidjar weaving. A striking statement piece for a living room, dining room, or office.
Vibrant warm tones of red, navy, ivory, sky blue, rust, camel, and charcoal, with a red field.
Bidjar is a Kurdish town in northwestern Iran, renowned for producing what are often called the "iron rugs of Persia" — the heaviest, most densely woven and structurally rigid pile rugs in the world. The distinctive construction technique, in which the weft threads are hammered tightly into place during weaving, creates an almost board-like stiffness and an exceptionally dense pile that wears virtually indefinitely.
Bidjar designs include elaborate herati patterns, large floral medallions, and the distinctive "garden" or vase carpet format. Their palette tends toward deep jewel tones — rich madder reds, indigos, and ivory. Bidjar rugs are ideal for high-traffic areas and are among the most durable of all Oriental rugs.
