This vintage Malayer rug is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian village weaving distinguished by its richly layered all-over pattern and time-softened palette. The teal-blue field is animated by geometric floral motifs, ivory and taupe detailing, and striking rust accents near one end, all framed by a finely drawn border that showcases the character of hand-knotted craftsmanship. Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.
