This vintage Khotan rug is a handmade, one-of-a-kind piece distinguished by its serene pale blue field and elegant all-over lattice of stylized floral and tree-like motifs. Its softly faded palette and refined borderwork give it the understated sophistication collectors prize in East Turkestan carpets, while the hand-knotted character and balanced composition make it especially versatile in layered interiors. Khotan rugs are from the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan. These unique rugs made in the towns Khotan, Kashgar, and Yarkand are often referred to as Samarkand after the main trading town in the region. They have a combination of designs and being on the silk route have influences from their Chinese, Turkoman, and Turkish neighbors. Fretwork, cloud borders, trellis patterns, pomegranates and carnations all are incorporated into their designs. They are of long and relatively narrow size with simplistic and spacious designs.
