This antique Torkaman rug, circa 1910, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind tribal weaving distinguished by its richly drawn geometric field and striking compartmental layout. Deep rust and burgundy tones are animated by ivory and dark brown motifs, with crisp border work and finely articulated tribal ornament that showcase the character of hand-knotted craftsmanship. Its bold square format and graphic presence make it an ideal accent for an entryway, office, or bedroom.
Muted warm tones of rust, burgundy, ivory, dark brown, terracotta, and black, with a rust field.
Torkaman (also Turkoman) rugs are produced by the various Turkmen tribes of Central Asia — Tekke, Yomut, Ersari, Saryk, Salor, and others — across a broad territory spanning Turkmenistan, northern Afghanistan, and northeastern Iran. Each tribe has its own distinctive gul (emblem) and compositional vocabulary, making Torkaman rugs a rich field for collectors and scholars.
They are woven on a wool foundation with a medium-to-long pile and predominantly natural dyes, with the deep madder red that characterizes so much Turkmen work derived from the madder plant. Their strict geometric order, superb wool, and tribal authenticity make them among the most compelling of all Oriental rugs.
