This vintage Saraband rug is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian carpet with an elegant all-over boteh design rendered in a beautifully time-softened palette. Its finely drawn border, repeating field motif, and gently faded surface give it the refined character collectors seek in hand-knotted decorative rugs. An ideal oversized foundation for a living room, dining room, or office.
Faded neutral tones of taupe, brown, ivory, charcoal, and beige, with a taupe field.
Saraband rugs are woven in the Saraband district of Arak province in west-central Iran, and are perhaps best known for the "mir" or boteh field pattern — rows of small paisley-like teardrop forms — that has become one of the most widely recognized motifs in Oriental rug design. The boteh may represent a bent cypress tree, a flame, or a stylized leaf; its exact origin is debated.
Classic Saraband rugs feature this all-over boteh field on a rich red ground with a distinctive border composition. They are woven on a cotton foundation with the asymmetric knot and a medium pile. Their warm, rhythmic pattern and versatile palette have made them enduringly popular in traditional and transitional interiors.
