This antique Bidjar rug, circa 1940, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian carpet with an elegant all-over floral design and a beautifully time-softened palette. Its richly detailed field in rose and terracotta tones is framed by a classic border, showcasing the refined drawing and dense ornamentation that make Bidjar rugs so admired by collectors. A distinctive decorative piece for a living room, dining room, or bedroom.
Faded warm tones of rose, terra cotta, taupe, ivory, brown, sage, and sky blue, with a rose field.
Bidjar is a Kurdish town in northwestern Iran, renowned for producing what are often called the "iron rugs of Persia" — the heaviest, most densely woven and structurally rigid pile rugs in the world. The distinctive construction technique, in which the weft threads are hammered tightly into place during weaving, creates an almost board-like stiffness and an exceptionally dense pile that wears virtually indefinitely.
Bidjar designs include elaborate herati patterns, large floral medallions, and the distinctive "garden" or vase carpet format. Their palette tends toward deep jewel tones — rich madder reds, indigos, and ivory. Bidjar rugs are ideal for high-traffic areas and are among the most durable of all Oriental rugs.
