This antique Belouch rug, circa 1920, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind tribal weaving distinguished by a lattice of hooked lozenges, richly drawn minor motifs, and a deeply saturated palette. Its geometric field and multiple guard borders create a strong architectural presence, while the hand-knotted wool pile and crisp tribal ornament give it the character collectors seek in early Belouch pieces. Belouch (also Baluch or Balochi) rugs are woven by the Baluch tribal confederacy spanning eastern Iran, western Afghanistan, and parts of Pakistan. Among the most immediate and expressive of all tribal rugs, they are made on horizontal ground looms using a wool foundation and a distinctive palette dominated by deep reds, rich browns, dark navy, and ivory — colors drawn from the natural dyes of the desert plateau.
Designs include prayer formats, repeating geometric field patterns, and stylized tree-of-life compositions, often finished with elaborate flatwoven kilim ends. Their rustic, heartfelt quality and superb natural dyes make them perennially popular with collectors and designers seeking authentic tribal character.
