This vintage Khotan rug is a handmade, one-of-a-kind piece distinguished by its serene all-over field of stylized pomegranate and floral motifs framed by an intricate geometric border. Softly faded ivory, pale blue, and sand tones give the composition an airy elegance, while the hand-knotted look and refined East Turkestan design language lend it strong collector appeal. Khotan rugs are from the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan. These unique rugs made in the towns Khotan, Kashgar, and Yarkand are often referred to as Samarkand after the main trading town in the region. They have a combination of designs and being on the silk route have influences from their Chinese, Turkoman, and Turkish neighbors. Fretwork, cloud borders, trellis patterns, pomegranates and carnations all are incorporated into their designs. They are of long and relatively narrow size with simplistic and spacious designs.
