This antique Sparta rug, circa 1940, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Greek village weaving distinguished by its softly faded palette and bold geometric medallion composition. The ivory field is framed by a richly drawn border in powder blue, with angular floral and tribal-inflected motifs that showcase the character and artistry collectors prize in vintage handwoven rugs. Its light, airy coloration and balanced design make it an elegant foundation for a living room, bedroom, or dining room.
Faded cool tones of ivory, powder blue, slate, and cream, with a ivory field.
Sparta rugs are woven in the town of Isparta in south west Turkey. They produce rugs that are curvilinear in design with scrolling arabesques, leaves and flowers, usually in a softer palette and more often with central medallions and open fields but also use all over patterns. They are woven on a cotton foundation with an all wool pile.
