This antique Khotan rug, circa 1920, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind East Turkestan weaving with a beautifully balanced field of stylized botanical motifs arranged in orderly panels. Its warm coral field, deep navy border, and softly aged palette give it a refined decorative presence, while the hand-knotted patterning and crisp border work reflect the distinctive elegance collectors prize in Khotan rugs. An ideal accent for a hallway, entryway, or beside a bed.
Faded warm tones of coral, navy, camel, ivory, terra cotta, and slate, with a coral field.
Khotan rugs are from the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan. These unique rugs made in the towns Khotan, Kashgar, and Yarkand are often referred to as Samarkand after the main trading town in the region. They have a combination of designs and being on the silk route have influences from their Chinese, Turkoman, and Turkish neighbors. Fretwork, cloud borders, trellis patterns, pomegranates and carnations all are incorporated into their designs. They are of long and relatively narrow size with simplistic and spacious designs.
