This antique Tehran rug, circa 1920, is a hand-knotted Persian carpet distinguished by a richly detailed crimson field of repeating floral latticework and small ivory rosettes. Its deep navy floral main border and finely layered guard borders create a formal, balanced frame around the all-over design. An ideal centerpiece for a living room, dining area, or office.
Vibrant warm tones of crimson, navy, ivory, rust, slate, teal, rose, and charcoal, with a crimson field.
Tehran, the capital of Iran, became an important center of fine rug production in the Qajar period of the nineteenth century, catering to a wealthy and cosmopolitan urban clientele with sophisticated tastes. Tehran rugs are characterized by their very fine weave, their use of Kork wool, and their elaborate curvilinear compositions — elaborate medallion designs, hunting scenes, and garden formats — drawn from the classical Persian repertoire.
Their palette tends toward rich jewel tones with a high proportion of ivory and gold. Antique Tehran rugs are among the finest and most formally ambitious of all Persian city rugs, suited to the most elegant of interiors.
