Axminster (also Axminster) rugs take their name from the English town of Axminster in Devon, where Thomas Whitty established a hand-knotted carpet manufactory in 1755, having studied examples of Turkish and Persian rugs. The Axminster workshop produced carpets for the grandest English country houses and for royal palaces, with designs by leading architects of the day including Robert Adam and Thomas Moore.
The term "Axminster" later became associated with a particular power-loom weaving technique — Axminster weave — but antique hand-knotted Axminster carpets are rare and highly valued as examples of eighteenth-century English decorative art at its finest.
