This antique Saraband rug, handmade in Persia circa 1920, is a one-of-a-kind hand-knotted runner with an elegantly time-softened palette and refined all-over lattice design. Its faded ivory field, pale blue-green motifs, and delicate border create a beautifully understated traditional presence that showcases the nuanced character collectors prize in early 20th-century Persian weaving. Saraband rugs are woven in the Saraband district of Arak province in west-central Iran, and are perhaps best known for the "mir" or boteh field pattern — rows of small paisley-like teardrop forms — that has become one of the most widely recognized motifs in Oriental rug design. The boteh may represent a bent cypress tree, a flame, or a stylized leaf; its exact origin is debated.

Classic Saraband rugs feature this all-over boteh field on a rich red ground with a distinctive border composition. They are woven on a cotton foundation with the asymmetric knot and a medium pile. Their warm, rhythmic pattern and versatile palette have made them enduringly popular in traditional and transitional interiors.
