A small rug goes where a room needs one defined spot rather than a covered floor: inside the front door, beside the bed, in front of the kitchen sink, and under a desk or a reading chair. Each spot has a size that fits it. A 2' x 3' covers the floor at a sink, a 3' x 5' suits a standard front door or one side of a bed, and a 4' x 6' fills a small foyer or holds a reading chair and a side table. Our Small Rugs run up to about 4' x 6', more than 400 of them, every one handmade and one of a kind, and about one in four is a 3' x 5'.
Check two things before you buy. Our titles give the size in whole feet, rounded down, so a rug titled 3' x 5' can measure anything up to 3'11" x 5'11"; the exact measurements are on every product page. Then mark those measurements on the floor with painter's tape. The tape shows how much floor the rug covers, and whether a door or a chair clears it.
Entryway rug size, inside the front door
Choose a rug at least as wide as the door. Most front doors are 36 inches wide, so a 3' x 5' works in either direction: laid crosswise it covers the full arc of the door as it opens, and laid lengthwise it runs into the house. In a foyer with more floor, a 4' x 6' covers more of it and still leaves a band of bare floor around the edges. If the entry is a long, narrow hall rather than a square foyer, a runner fits it better than a small rug; see Runner Rugs.
Then choose the weave for the door. A kilim is woven flat, with no pile, so a door that swings in over it clears it easily, and a kilim shakes out when the entry gets gritty. A knotted Persian rug has a wool pile that is softer underfoot and hides tracked-in dirt, especially on a dark field; measure the gap under the door first, because a thick pile can catch. This Vintage Kilim Area Rug (3' x 5') has a brown and ivory lattice of stepped diamonds, and this Vintage Malayer Area Rug (4' x 6') has an elongated medallion on a deep navy field with coral-red corners.

Bedside rug size and placement
A bedside rug is the first floor your feet touch in the morning, so place it where you step out of bed. On each side of the bed, a 2' x 3' or a 3' x 5' covers that spot. For more coverage, a runner-shaped 2' x 6' or 3' x 6' laid along the side of the bed runs most of its length, since queen and king beds are both 80 inches long. At the foot of a queen bed, which is 60 inches wide, a 4' x 6' laid crosswise reaches six inches past each side.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, so a matched pair for both sides of a bed is rare. Pick two rugs that share a color, or put one rug on the side you get up on. This Vintage Oushak Runner Rug (2' x 6') measures 2'10" x 6'4", long enough to run beside a bed, with coral flowers across an ivory field inside a narrow rust border. This Vintage Oushak Area Rug (3' x 5') sets a geometric medallion on a faded blush field.
The softest palettes for a bedroom are in our small Oushaks, woven in western Turkey: 52 of the 66 are faded, and the most common fields are ivory, blush, coral, rose and peach. A bedside is also the easiest place for a small antique rug, eighty years and older, because bare feet are the lightest wear a rug gets. About half of our small rugs are antique, and six in ten are faded.

At the sink, the desk and the reading chair
In front of a kitchen sink or a bathroom vanity, a 2' x 3' or a 2' x 4' covers the spot where you stand. A flat or low rug is the easier choice there: it lies flat, it does not catch a toe, and a kilim shakes out in a minute. This Vintage Kilim Area Rug (2' x 3') is woven in horizontal bands of ivory, slate and terra cotta.
Under a small desk, turn a 4' x 6' so its long side runs out from the desk. A desk is usually about 2 feet deep, which leaves 4 feet of rug for the chair to roll back on. Under a reading chair, a 3' x 5' or a 4' x 6' holds the chair and a side table with room for your feet. A small rug can also go on top of a larger plain one, such as a jute or sisal rug in a living room, to add pattern without replacing it.
This Antique Hamadan Area Rug (4' x 6') is sized for a reading chair and a side table, with a geometric medallion in pale blue and terracotta on a faded ivory field inside terracotta borders. Hamadan is a city in western Iran, and Hamadan and Malayer rugs are the most common of our small Persian rugs. Seven in ten of those small Persians are antique.
Start with the spot, then the rug: measure it, tape it out, and shop by that size. A 3' x 5' fits a front door or a bedside, a 4' x 6' fits a foyer, a desk or a reading chair, and a 2' x 3' fits the sink. Every small rug we have is handmade, one of a kind, and photographed flat, so the photo shows the whole rug before it reaches your floor.
