This handmade, one-of-a-kind antique Malayer rug from Persia, circa 1910, showcases a striking medallion composition framed by an intricate border and rendered in softly timeworn terracotta, ivory, and blue tones. Its hand-knotted character and beautifully aged surface give the geometric tribal design exceptional depth, with a spacious field balanced by finely drawn minor motifs and a collector-worthy patina. Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.
