This antique Khorassan rug, circa 1900, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian carpet distinguished by its refined all-over floral field and softly drawn central medallion. Its nuanced palette of rose, ivory, and muted navy, paired with an intricate series of guard borders, gives the piece an elegant, atmospheric presence that showcases masterful hand-knotted craftsmanship. An ideal centerpiece for a living room, dining room, or office.
Faded warm tones of rose, ivory, dusty pink, taupe, charcoal, muted navy, and burgundy, with a ivory field.
Khorasan (also Khorassan) is a vast region of northeastern Iran encompassing a number of important weaving centers, most notably Meshed (now Mashhad), the region's capital. Khorasan rugs share certain characteristics — double-wefted cotton foundations, asymmetric knotting, and elaborate curvilinear floral designs — while varying considerably in quality and palette from workshop to workshop.
The finest antique Khorasan carpets rival the great city workshops of central Persia in their technical achievement. Their palette tends toward rich reds, deep blues, and ivory, with medallion and all-over floral formats predominating. They are substantial, formal rugs suited to large rooms and traditional interiors.
