Rya rugs are a Scandinavian textile tradition with roots in the Viking Age, originally woven as fur substitutes for bedding and boat covers in the cold Nordic climate. The characteristic long, shaggy pile — created by knotting bunches of wool yarn at intervals across a woven base — gives Rya rugs their distinctive tactile warmth and visual softness.
In the twentieth century, Swedish and Finnish designers transformed the Rya into a fine art form, producing bold abstract compositions that became icons of mid-century Scandinavian design. Vintage Rya rugs from the 1950s through 1970s are now eagerly collected as design objects, prized for their strong graphic quality, warm wool pile, and connection to the golden age of Nordic modernism.
