WHY CHOOSE AN ANTIQUE/VINTAGE RUG INSTEAD OF A MACHINE MADE RUG?

Antique and Vintage rugs are handmade and works of art. They have more character and aesthetic value than machine made rugs. Compare a painting done by an artist to a photograph of a painting. Both are visually the same, but the painting done by the artist has more individuality, therefore more value.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANTIQUE RUGS AND VINTAGE RUGS?

Antique rugs are 100 years old. Anything made from 1920 and before are considered antique. Semi-antique rugs are made between 1920-1950. Anything younger is considered Vintage.

WHY ARE THE RUGS SO EXPENSIVE?

The entire process of rug making is handmade. Every knot is tied by hand. The wool and yarn are handspun and dyed by hand. Even after the rug is completed, they are sheared and washed by hand. A lot of labor and love goes into making every rug which adds to the cost. On the other hand, a machine rug is made at 50x or more the speed.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BACK OF THE RUG?

The back represents the tightness of the weave. You can see how small the knots are and how compact it is. The tightness of the weave adds to the quality of the rug and makes it more durable. We always proudly show the back of every rug on our online shop.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR ONE OF THESE RUGS TO BE MADE?

A 9’ x 12’ rug takes 3 people simultaneously sitting across the loom about 4 months to weave (depending how tightly the rug is woven). This means each person weaves 3 feet of the width.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH SIZE RUG TO BUY?

A rug defines the space of the room, so this would depend on the layout of your furniture and how much floor you want to cover. Also keep in mind the setting of your furniture. Do you want your sofa and chairs on top or next to the rug?

HOW DO I PICK THE RIGHT RUG TO MATCH MY ROOM/FURNITURE?

We offer complimentary design consultations. Make an appointment with our design experts by e-mailing info@rugstyling.com. We will be happy to help you find the perfect rug for any space!

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY RUG? CAN I VACUUM OR STEAM?

We highly recommend gentle vacuuming once a week (depending on the usage). We also recommend having it washed by a handmade rug specialist cleaner once every 2-5 years. Rugs in high traffic areas should be cleaned every 2 years. This will add longevity and value to your rug. Steam cleaning is not recommended, the rug must be soak washed.

ARE YOUR RUGS PROFESSIONALLY PRE-CLEANED?

Yes, all rugs are professionally pre-cleaned.

WHY ARE THERE IMPERFECTIONS ON MY RUG?

Vintage hand woven rugs have natural wear and tear, but we think these imperfections only add to the beauty and uniqueness of the rug.

HOW DO I CLEAN A STAIN ON MY RUG? WHAT IS THE BEST METHOD?

We recommend blotting the area as quickly as possible with a clean rag or towel. Soak the stain out of the rug and do not let it sit. Send it to a handmade rug specialist cleaner if the stain remains.

IS A RUG PAD IMPORTANT?

Only if you are concerned about the rug slipping on the floor. It does not add to the longevity of the rug, only prevents slipping.

SHOULD I ROTATE MY RUG?

Yes, it is highly recommended to rotate the rug once a year for more even wear throughout the years. This way, all parts of the rug get the same amount of usage.

HOW LONG WILL MY RUG LAST?

It depends on how well you maintain it. It can last a lifetime and pass down from generation to generation if maintained well.
