Mahal rugs are from Mahallet, about 145 miles west of Arak. Mahals are woven in a cottage industry setting and being neither floral or geometric, have that ideal informality that enables them to fit in any décor. They are woven on a cotton foundation using soft lustrous wool and are Persian (asymmetrically) knotted.
They have a medium weave, soft palette and often use an all over pattern making them desirable for interior designers. It has a subdued palette of ivories, grays, and browns. The design is a stylized "Harshang" pattern with a folksy drawing which gives it a country charm and aesthetic. Mahal rugs are similar to their better known Cousins Sultanabad’s.
